Today’s show is with long time listener of the Podcast Alex Moran.  Alex was a former associate sales rep for one of the largest medical device distributors in the United States and now has landed a position with one of the largest medical device companies in the world as a clinical specialist.

A common question that will come from this is what’s the difference between an associate sales rep and a clinical specialist?

 An associate sales rep- is a more entry level position where you will be working under a Full line Sales rep helping them cover the territory. This could include, but not limited to running trays, covering cases, setting up lunches, etc. A Clinical Specialist- supports a product and is an expert in this product. Many times, they will work with both doctors and the patients. They are a huge resource to a territory and normally also work with a full line sales rep.

A clinical specialist normally has an opportunity at a higher compensation plan as well.

*Just to note: not every product needs a clinical specialist.

Alex knew at a young age that he wanted to become a medical device sales rep and the company he just landed a position with has always been on his radar. Alex share’s his tips on how he’s had success landing positions with such big-time companies.

Alex’s Tips

  1. Relationships with Recruiters are Important - Alex was able to land big time interviews because he had a great relationship with a recruiter.

  2. Be Confident - You have to believe that you’re the best candidate and you will get this job (you have to believe in yourself first, before anyone else ever can).

  3. Stand Out - What are you doing to stand out? How are you following up?

  4. Be Open to Change - If you’re really wanting to break in, you should be open to change and possible relocation.

  5. Play Your Experience to the Position - Show how your past experiences have prepared you for Medical Device Sales and this position.

Alex is a great example of going after his dreams and not taking no for an option! Alex has accomplished so much at such a young age! Congratulations Alex on landing your dream job, know you will crush it!
